The 5th edition of You and the Natural World (YNW) Grade School
Science Series (Grades 1 to 6) allows the learners to discover the wonders of science through the natural world in the 21st century. Moreover, it aims to develop and enhance learners’ 21st century skills such as creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills that will help them successfully navigate the dynamic landscape of the 21st century. Furthermore, it is geared towards preparing the learners to be globally connected, socially responsible, critically informed, resilient, and self-directed individuals who are able to make sound judgments and decisions towards the betterment of human life, sustainable environment and for nation building. It also serves as a powerful tool and resource material for science educators on how to further elevate teaching-learning experiences to be more fun, relevant, and engaging for the learners.

The 5th edition of YNW series empowers and encourages learners to explore science in the natural world that will enable them to:

a) understand and appreciate science applications in everyday life;

b) create meaningful connections between and among concepts;

c) cultivate love for learning and discovery;

d) creatively find solutions to the problems/challenges.

This enriched series:

1. is compliant to the Department of Education’s MATATAG curriculum;

2. gives greater emphasis on the relation between the learners and the world around them;

3. contains STEM activities (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) that enhance learners’ creativity, design’s thinking skills, and/or laboratory skills;

4. provides more concise explanations of scientific theories, resulting in a smaller volume of reading materials and giving learners more time for hands-on activities;

5. provides varied forms of meaningful activities and appropriate assessments; and

6. develops scientific attitudes and promotes responsible use of technology.

Dr. Ernesto Y. Sibal was one of the few Filipinos in academic publishing who can irrefutably lay claim to these three titles—Patriot, Pioneer and Innovator. A staunch patriot, Dr. Sibal fiercely advocated the vision of designating Filipino-authored books for young Filipino learners. This vision was enabled by the establishment of Alemar’s Bookstore in 1958, and through the foresight and drive of Alegria Rodriguez, who shared in the vision of her husband, she helped galvanize then fledgling Alemar's Bookstore as the place to go for textbooks and school needs, propelling it to become the first established bookstore chain in the country.
