Dr. Ernesto Y. Sibal was one of the few Filipinos in academic publishing who can irrefutably lay claim to these three titles—Patriot, Pioneer and Innovator. A staunch patriot, Dr. Sibal fiercely advocated the vision of designating Filipino-authored books for young Filipino learners. This vision was enabled by the establishment of Alemar’s Bookstore in 1958, and through the foresight and drive of Alegria Rodriguez, who shared in the vision of her husband, she helped galvanize then fledgling Alemar's Bookstore as the place to go for textbooks and school needs, propelling it to become the first established bookstore chain in the country.

Phoenix Language Package Skill Builders for English Proficiency

The Phoenix Language Package: Skill Builders for English Proficiency (PLP: SEP) offers a development program designed to help high school students gain competence in English. Through mastery approach, the series aims to equip the learners with relevant real-life skills not only to meet the demands of the times but also to acquire enduring understanding, which leads to lifelong learning.

Author/s:
Grade 7: Dr. Araceli M. Villamin, Evelyn S. Salazar, and Zenen R. Alumbro
Grade 8:Josephine M. Luna and Marites S. Sena
Grade 9: Carleen S. Sedilla, Evelyn S. Salazar, and Ma. Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin
Grade 10: Josephine M. Luna, Dr. Elineth Elizabeth L. Suarez, and Evelyn S. Salazar
Grades 7 to 10 Coordinators: Dr. Araceli M. Villamin and Evelyn S. Salazar

Level/s: 7, 8, 9, and 10

The worktexts can be used in two different ways:

  • As part of the lessons in the Communication Arts Program
  • As the main text in an intensive course for mastering the English language

The Worktext contains lessons, exercises, and activities that develop language skills through listening, speaking, grammar, and writing. It is organized into four units, each unit with several lessons labeled SBL (Skill Builders
in Language). Each SBL has three main components:

  • Entering the Chatroom focuses on listening and speaking.
  • Highlighting Grammar focuses on grammar usage and structure.
  • Using the Notepad focuses on writing skills and the mechanics and process in writing including spelling and vocabulary.

The exercises in each component follow the mastery approach to skill development —Starter, Reinforcer, and Challenger.

The Learning Guide, which is a sample for the teachers on how to guide their students, will help the students realize that the communication skills they learn and master are not just for the present but are for lifelong learning. Thus, goals are set so that lessons learned and skills mastered today are useful in the future.

The Syllabus presents a course map that allows teachers and coordinators to see the scope and sequence of each level “at a glance.” It also includes the values that are embedded in the lessons.

The PLP: SEP soundtrack is a creative add-on. We call it the Listen and Learn Channel, which is a CD for the tapescripts used in listening activities in each level.

The worktexts can be used in two different ways:

  • As part of a lesson in the regular reading and/or Communication Arts Program
  • As the main text in an extensive course for mastering the four fundamental reading skills

Each PLP worktext is organized into five major reading areas—each developing a cluster of important subskills needed for an effective reading course.

  • Word perception skills enable students to use phonetic, contextual, and structural analyses. These skills build special vocabulary and use effective strategies in word building.
  • Study and library skills teach students how to locate and gather information. These skills help the students select, recall, evaluate data, and organize and synthesize information.
  • Comprehension skills help students identify main ideas, understand cause-and-effect relationships, determine time line sequence, and summarize and outline data.
  • Literary appreciation skills enrich students’ knowledge as students differentiate literary types; identify tone, mood, and atmosphere; analyze humor; and evaluate critical and creative writing.
  • Oral interpretation or reading with expression skills intend to develop the students’ ability to read with expression and interpret literary pieces with proper phrasing or chunking, movements, and expressions. These skills provide the teachers with new literary materials and interesting selections for finger plays, Jazz Chants, Speech Choir, dramatic oral reading, and Chamber or Readers Theater presentation.

Introduction to Pinyin and Chinese Characters

The Chinese language, along with the rapid development of China’s economy, is becoming increasingly popular in the world. Offering Chinese language courses to Filipinos will serve as a bridge to communicate information and exchange ideas between different people and cultures.

Author/s:
Ma. Johanna M. Batolos, Romeo S. Bautista Jr., and Ye Jianlan; Coordinator: Indrie S. Ronda

Level/s: High School

A vital tool in learning Mandarin!

This book, Pinӯin Yu Hanzi: Introduction to Pinyin and Chinese Characters, is a collaborative effort of both Filipino and Chinese educators committed to the ideals of producing better equipped Filipinos ready to cope with the demands of globalization, through the knowledge of the Chinese language as a potent tool.

  • The book’s contents are basic pronunciation (initial sounds, final sounds, and combinations) and beginning writing (simple strokes and sample characters). It follows a format that is the same throughout each session. Each lesson progresses with no new instruction and is primarily a buildup from the previous lessons.
  • The book contains exercises that cover the content discussed. All the answers to the exercises are part of the lessons.
  • The book can also be used by any English-speaking Mandarin teacher. It is most suitable for a teacher who can speak both English and Mandarin for the lessons in the book to be put to maximum use and also because there is Chinese character writing involved.

With this book, students will gain confidence and proficiency in speaking Mandarin.
Mandarin Chinese or Putōnghuà is not impossible to learn if you are armed with the basic tools for learning this new language. Each lesson in this book will equip the student with the following skills:

  1. Learning of proper pronunciation of Chinese phonetic alphabet
  2. Practice writing of basic Chinese strokes
  3. Recognizing basic Chinese characters
  4. Learning and practicing conversational Putōnghuà
