Dr. Ernesto Y. Sibal was one of the few Filipinos in academic publishing who can irrefutably lay claim to these three titles—Patriot, Pioneer and Innovator. A staunch patriot, Dr. Sibal fiercely advocated the vision of designating Filipino-authored books for young Filipino learners. This vision was enabled by the establishment of Alemar’s Bookstore in 1958, and through the foresight and drive of Alegria Rodriguez, who shared in the vision of her husband, she helped galvanize then fledgling Alemar's Bookstore as the place to go for textbooks and school needs, propelling it to become the first established bookstore chain in the country.

Road to Emmaus Series: Stay with Us, Lord!

The Road to Emmaus: Stay with Us, Lord! is a four-volume series intended for senior high school as they engage themselves more deeply in their theological or religious education courses.

Author/s:
Fr. Richard A. Panganiban, PhD (Cand.) and Fr. Crispin U. de Guzman, SThD

Level/s: Senior High

  • Revelation and Faith (Book 1) offers the students two fundamental truths. One, the divine revelation is God’s disclosure of Himself and of His eternal will through His word and works. Two, faith as a supernatural virtue given to us at Baptism is our response to God’s revelation. As a worktext, it also aims to help them integrate faith and life.
  • Our Holy Catholic Church (Book 2) presents a picture of the Church that is solidly entrenched in the Sacred Scripture, the Sacred Tradition, and the Magisterium of the Church. How the students will acquire a sound doctrinal foundation of their knowledge of the Church is the primary objective of this book.
  • Liturgy and Sacraments (Book 3) is essential so that the students will be able to understand and appreciate the life and mission of the Church, the sacraments, and the liturgy. It intends to lead the students to a deeper appreciation of the outward beauty of the liturgy, which will certainly bring them to the very heart of the liturgy, namely, the worship of God in “Spirit and truth” (Jn 4:24).
  • Life and Beyond (Book 4) deals with the “last things” or eschatology. Its main objective is to present to the students the compelling, but often neglected truths about what lies beyond the present life. It helps the students live the present life with the “end” in mind because the eschatological realities are not just “future things,” but truths that are deeply embedded in the “here and now” of our Christian life and faith.

Transformative Values Education Series

The Transformative Values Education Series is a part of an attempt of the CEAP Superintendents’ Commission to bring about a culture of transformation in the Philippine society through a revitalized values education program, focusing on the following critical issues: Environment Education, Gender Sensitivity Education, Political Education, and Justice and Peace Education.

Author/s:
Grade 7: Sister Lourdes M. Dulay, ICM
Grade 8: Fr. Romeo B. Gonzales, MS
Grade 9: Sr. Carmeli Ma. V. Catan, OSA
Grade 10: Ma. Belen B. De Jesus, Ph.D.

Level/s: 7, 8, 9, and 10

Attempts to bring forward and facilitates the nurturance of the transformative education core values to the level of the classrooms!

  • The contents of the worktexts are organized along four major themes (having their origin partly from the DepEd Values Education Continuum and from the CEAP Superintendents’ Commission Transformative Education project in 2002).
  • The discussions in the series include: Man/Woman Gender Sensitivity; Man/Woman and their Environment; Man/Woman as Citizens; and Man/Woman, Builders of Justice and Peace.

The New Grade 7— I Am a Child of the Universe is intended to help the students understand themselves, that they are born with talents and wisdom which should give them confidence to handle whatever obstacles that may come their way. The students will be guided to discover their nature, their family roots, gender orientation, their uniqueness, and fundamental rights and duties.

The New Grade 8— My Family: A Gift of God is for the student to establish his/her personal identity in relation to his/her family, community, the nation, nature, and the entire cosmos. This is important in order to sustain the first year lessons on life-giving, life-sustaining, and life-promoting culture.

The New Grade 9— Transformative Citizenry for Nation Building intends to instill in the minds and hearts of our students transformative values education. This effort of transformation is anchored on the vision to realize our political education advocacy, develop self-determination and self-reliance, establish family and societal solidarity, produce socially responsible citizenry, protect democratic rights, and promote national sovereignty.

The New Grade 10— Creating Harmony in the Universe seeks to sensitize the senior students—the young adults to the need to respond to the call for justice and peace; gender sensitivity concern, environmental care, and citizenship duties in their daily life. Having been immersed in these issues in their first, second, and third year lessons, the fourth year students will now advocate for a better quality of life lived in justice, be steeped in environmental ownership, concern for the common good, and uphold equality and being. Henceforth, the students will be one in creating and promoting harmony in the universe.

The Teachers Guides, Learning Guides, and Syllabi contained in this series are especially designed to facilitate their delivery of transformative values education services. Each teachers guide attempts to explain to the teacher how she/he might handle the lesson or lessons contained in the corresponding worktext of the particular year level.

Values Education Series for the SEDP

At present when almost everyone’s value system is slowly deteriorating, the second edition of the Values Education Series may be the answer to the growing need for a reevaluation of values, the core of one’s whole being. It brings into focus the most important areas of one’s life—oneself, one’s community, one’s neighbors, and one’s God.

Author/s:
Level I: Ma. Zilpha Palma-Rallos
Level II, III, and IV: Ma. Victoria L. Tuvilla

Series Coordinator: Monserrat Ruiz-Masbad

Series Project Director: Bro. Rolando R. Dizon, FSC

Level/s: High School

With a stronger drive to instill values, this series—

  • gives weight to the worth of every human being as a creation of God;
  • impresses upon the students the importance of faith in a very confusing world;
  • instills in the students Filipinism, pride in the Filipino heritage and magnifies the importance of family and friends;
  • discusses societal issues, such as freedom, social justice, democracy, and human rights;
  • awakens the students through immersion programs and field trips, to the plight of their less fortunate brothers and sisters and to the sad condition of Mother Earth;
  • encourages parents to play an active role in the value formation of their children;
  • deals with quite sensitive issues, such as sexuality and premarital sex, with openness but with tact; and
  • evolves around the two most important commandments of God—love your neighbor and love God.

The Worktext employs the value-clarification and action-learning approaches in putting one’s values to the fore and in encouraging personal and social action based on these values. Each has a glossary explaining terms as they were used in the text so as to avoid misinterpretation. Every lesson has a module preview presenting as an overview of what the lesson is and a set of desired objectives to be satisfied after each lesson.

The Teachers Guide provides additional lessons as well as suggested class activities and exercises.
